Thanks to a comprehensive database of Haitian postcards that is being compiled since 1995, you can now find the best and largest source of information on over 9,000 postcards (as of March 30, 2011). Details and photos are given on more than 7,200 cards.

You can find all these cards in alphabetical order, arranged by publishers. Within each publisher's page see thumbnails of all the cards the publisher produced and with one click, see information on each postcard (and sometimes large scan of that card). This apply only for the postcards of Haiti. The last entry and news tabs give you up to date information on the site and others. The La Poste a Haiti postcards and advertising cards section is being updated (under the card tab/haiti/la poste a haiti). Also you can see all 213 QSL cards in a thumbnail version already and compare with what you have, while the details per card is being constructed.

Postcards of Haiti are very desirable. First in terms of world production on a country by country basis, very few cards were made from Haiti. Also considering the state in which that country is now, these old images are very precious. One could appreciate how the infrastructure of the country was one hundred years ago, and now mostly gone after the January 12th 2010 earthquake. One could also see tramway and train images of the various services that existed in Port-au-Prince, but also in Cap Haitien, Gonaives etc ... All of which no longer exist.

For each card a rarity index is used to indicate how many example of that cards have been seen or reported. In the past two years, Haitian postcards have been going up in price. Real photo cards are very nice to have, as they were produced in much smaller quantities. Also in Europe, Haitian cards fetch more than double the prices that they sell for in the United States. The older cards sometimes have a 3 or 4 times price factor. The rarity index is,

• A for 1 card known, B for 2-4, C for 5-10, D for 11-99, E for 100+

Statistics on Haitians cards: 8000 different cards reported of which,

• 46% are of Port-au-Prince
• 78% have front image scanned and available
• 32% are real photo cards
• 8.6% are from Benoit Couba, the most prolific publisher of Haiti cards
• 59% have a caption on the front

HOW TO USE THE SITE AND FIND CARDS

Under the cards navigation tab or the publishers tab, go to haiti. Once you choose haiti or by publishers you will find the complete list of all the publishers of Haiti postcards. That will give you an idea of all the publishers that ever made cards on or related to Haiti. You could also find how many cards they have published and the period. You could maybe see in relation to these numbers how many of the publisher's cards you have in your own collection. Publisher's names that are underlined are those that you could click and see full list of their cards and also each of their cards, if the data has been fully entered.

Under the photo papers tab, you could go to agfa and click to get information on that photo paper, or let go on photo paper itself to see a list of all the types of papers used for Haitian postcards.
